Tripping the light fantastic: Nicholas James and Arthur Price of England look set to illuminate Harrods

Award winning jeweller, Nicholas James and the UK’s leading cutlery and silverware company, Arthur Price of England are collaborating on a unique pendant lamp commissioned for display in Harrods.

Nick Fitch, the founder and creative force behind Nicholas James, ‘Independent Retailer of the Year 2009’, specialises in beautifully designed, contemporary platinum and diamond jewellery and has gained a reputation for tackling unusual assignments.

Simon Price, CEO of the family-owned British business, Arthur Price, explains the philosophy behind the partnership; “I’ve been aware of Nick’s work for a number of years. I admire his integrity and pioneering spirit. Our respective companies embrace similar values, and we’re both stalwart champions of British craftsmanship. We decided to combine our relative expertise to produce an exceptional piece of creative engineering that marries our skills, captures the imagination and challenges convention.”

The finished article will be a magnificent spherical pendant lamp, 600mm in diameter, constructed from over 800 hundred Arthur Price of England stainless steel serving spoons. The design will radiate with the glow of perfectly inset LED star-bursts; whose luminosity belies the 75kg that the lamp weighs.

“The principle behind the design was to convey simplicity and elegance through the shape of the globe. Yet on closer inspection it becomes apparent that the structure has been formed from spoons. The integrity of each piece of cutlery remains intact but has been  collectively  sculpted  to  form  something  entirely  new.   There’s  also  definitely an element of quintessentially English humour in the piece as well, which is a reflection of both our characters.” Nick elaborates.

After months of dedicated and intensive labour this one-off showcase of British design and craftsmanship is due for completion in October and can also be seen as part of Harrods Christmas window display. Enquiries and commissions should be made via Arthur Price of England in the Silver Room on the Second Floor of Harrods.
