A Royal Appointment

It’s not every day you get to talk about royal relationships but at Arthur Price of England, we are incredibly honoured to have been granted not just one but two Royal Warrants over the years. And with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge recently announcing that they’re expecting their third bundle of joy, we thought it was about time we told you all about our link with the cherished Royal Family!

You no doubt already know that we at Arthur Price are proud of our long, illustrious history dating back to 1902, but the history of Royal Warrants goes back even further…all the way back to mediaeval times in fact, when competition for Royal favour was fierce.

Back then, the Royal Family got to choose from the very best tradespeople in the country, but they realised by the 15th century that there was a need to formally appoint preferred tradespeople with a Royal Warrant of Appointment – as head of the Royal Household, it was The Lord Chamberlain who had the job of awarding selected tradespeople with a Royal Warrant. Lo and behold, in 1840, the Royal Warrant Holders Association was formed – and it still stands today!

The Lord Chamberlain’s Rules state that ‘a Royal Warrant of Appointment is granted as a mark of recognition that the Warrant holder is a regular supplier of goods or services to one (or more) of: Her Majesty The Queen, His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, or their respective households.’ But don’t forget…Royal Warrant Holders must abide by The Lord Chamberlain’s Rules, otherwise Royal Warrants can be revoked – and we certainly wouldn’t want that!

So when did we get our Royal Warrants? Well, it was all the way back in 1977 that our first Royal Warrant was awarded to us by the Queen’s household, and the second was given to us in 1988 by Prince Charles’ household – and we have sustained them ever since. That means that Arthur Price cutlery proudly adorns the tables of the households of both Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales. If only that silverware could speak…

From our humble beginnings in Arthur Price’s living room to gracing the tables of royalty, not to mention celebrities including the Beckhams, RMS Titanic (the film and the liner!) and Concorde, our journey to becoming one of the most respected purveyors of cutlery in the world is grounded on one thing that’s been passed from generation to generation in the Price family: meticulous attention to detail, and of course, a passion for beautiful craftsmanship.

Why not experience a taste of the Royals’ lifestyle each and every day from the comfort of your own home? It’s easier than you think, as all you need to do is find your favourite cutlery in the Arthur Price range to set your dining table in the most magnificent fashion possible. We can’t wait to see how your table looks – fully set with Arthur Price cutlery – so please send us your favourite dinnertime photo of your dining table in all its glory via Facebook, Twitter or Instagram and we will proudly show it off!
